we thought about buying a piece of cheap land and whacking up a cabin under the planning radar, but then we thought about the main reasons why we wanted our own home and one of them was security and stability with kids of school going age.

so for us the no planning route didnt really provide that as your always going to be looking over your shoulder etc and hoping not to upset the wrong person and get a visit from the planners,  i know it works for some.

we then looked into building with planning and that seemed to be tricky and a costly and lengthy process in ireland.

I live in a fully mutual housing co-op on
18 acres of land.
Pay £1 for a share. Live here fully mutually. Low expenses designed to cover bills m maintenance /land projects etc.

No planners to fight although I see that coming at some point in my life.emoji6.png

Is that like a commune? Someone clearly owns the 18 acres, right? There must be something in it for him/her? Group sex  I assume. :D

The 18 acres is owned by the housing co op. The co op is owned by the members.
Like I say its fully mutual.
No owner. No landlord. No trustees. No group sex.

Shame about the group sex. :D

Fully mutual but you pay a quid to join? What am I missing here?

I assume you cant just build a house there? So its huts, tents or caravans or something else?

Is it a commune?

I wouldn't call it a commune. You might. That makes people think of group sex. It's an intentional housing coop. There is a 50 room house on the land.
The £1 is to buy your share of the housing co-op. It's a law thing. Can't give a share away.

Interesting. So you're just squatters then?

Do you even have electricity there? Running water?

This is where it goes wrong trig, why would they be squatters, why wouldn't they have electricity and water?

Certainly not for me but if it works for you it works for you.

I bet you're lying about the group sex. :D

Could you explain how you become a part 'owner' for a quid?
