PTO pump group 2 or 3

Trailer yesterday has done it’s yearly shit the PTO pump or gear box thing so wondering if I fitted a group 3 pump and gear box would I be at risk of damaging the hydraulics on the crane?or should it be group 3 any way???

Is it cast or alloy ,cast more for regular hard usage , are running it on tickover or higher,

sure mines a 3

Pretty sure it’s cast, replaced the pump last year but the gear box seems to have gone now ... I could just replace the gearbox but I think I may do both and put on cat 3 ... just didn’t want to be continuously blowing hoses.

I don't think I had an PTO pumps other than aluminium 2P gear pumps but the cast iron ones on the front of the traxcavator lasted better. In general it's whether the other components can take the flow, biggest bottleneck is likely the spool block.

 

A couple of other considerations:

 

What is the hydraulic reservoir? Perceived wisdom is it should be 1 1/2 times the flow per minute to allow cooling and settlement.

 

If the capacity is suitable for the crane at tickover then if the PTO is not switched off when driving the flow through the block increases considerably. Sucking a lot of viscous cold oil  on a winter's day kills pumps.

Can you not do away with the pto pump etc and run it from a spool with a free-flow return? That’s how my KTS runs and it’s fine tbh. That Valtra should have a decent pump built in I’d have thought.

I was told by Wilson’s it would not have the power, I would be a bit concerned about having it off the tractor as it’s easier to keep an eye on the levels off hydraulic oil in a separate tank and contamination to the tractor.. I’m a bit anal like that and my crane handling skills usually mean something bursts if I spend a week moving wood!
