Investing in a stump grinder

Hi all. Looking for some feedback on a possible investment plan. Currently in garden maintenance. I have about £40k in the bank which I’m looking to invest. I have been considering the idea of getting a radio controlled/tracked grinder (something like the Predator 38rx), getting the necessary tickets, a small trailer, and a services (CAT) detector with the idea of just mixing things up a little and having another source of income. Is there much demand for this? Could it be lucrative? Do most tree surgeons offer this service ‘in house’ or sub the work out? Questions and questions, I know, just putting the feelers out there.

Yep what Wolfie said. 20 years ago when finance wasn't quite so easy to get, it was pretty common place to sub in a firm such as stump busters. These days most tree surgery outfits have a stump grinder amongst their kit, even if its only a small pedestrian grinder.

I've no doubt you might get some work subbing in for the larger stumps, but is it lucrative? Probably not.

This guy  isnt mega far from me, and quoted my customer £950 for grinding out a large lime stump, 45inch plane stump and 18inch laurel stump. Reckoned it would be a long days work. Is that lucrative?... including 2 hours travel time + teeth + diesel Maybe if that's all you do all day you would find ways of doing it that you get better and more efficient?

I would say that’s pretty lucrative.... I know two contractors around my way in north Essex which just do stumps and they charge £400-450 a day...
