Anyone have any idea's on a minimum business setup eg- pickup, chipper, chainsaw, top handle saw, pole pruner, bit of old rope (joke!) pl insurance ,anything else? (oh yes and i survived the woods even got home on my own without the need of GPS! woodshed now full.)

Chipper/s, truck/s, 4x4/s, MEWP*, staff, chainsaws, climbing/rigging gear, a yard, tractor, log splitter, blower/other small machinery, ppe, PL & EL insurance, accountant, NPTC certs, storage for equipment, a wife that doesn't mind not seeing you very much.

*only necessary if:

1. You have money to burn, or

2. You enjoy taking twice as long to do a job, or

3. You're a bit of a girl, or

4. All of the above.

My advice would be to start with as little gear as you can, only buy things when really can't manage without them.

I started with a 16' Ifor Williams trailer and an Dihatsu F50, only bought a chipper when i was doing 5 days plus and knew the chipper was going to make me money.

Don't think you could really compete nowadays without a chipper, and there's some things you've got to have - like a yard, storage for your gear, etc.........
