Arboriculture the future ?

fencing takes skill though robert, any monkey can hack down a tree

Any monkey can also bang some posts in the ground:001_smile:

The way it is going to go imo is that all large LA/utility works etc will be run by management companies who will look towards the little guy to actually do the work at screwed down prices.

The HSE if they get there way will more or less put a stop to the little man making a decent wage and still complying. It will therefore widen the gap between the little guy doing a fair job and the cut and run types. I'm thinking along the lines of the HSE banning saws up trees having to use a MEWP(or enforcing it) etc etc.

Myself and a few of the other local lads are going to have to start diversifying into landscaping/fencing etc to make a wage.

Although no doubt things will be a lot different regionally I guess.

there isnt tree police mate, just a consceince, they cant ban tree climbing with a saw because there are millions of trees and saws, i passed some horrific tree work today, holy moly it was awful, i used to do the guys work until the last time i quoted and he thought i was too pricey, now someone has come in and hatchet jobed a couple of big sitkas, i am probably the only one who notices it, the nieghbours will be delighted to get their view back.

They did ban them in Germany thats how a load of English made a fortune back in the 70's. Well as far as I am informed.

Its just that all the rules/regs/guidelines dont help one bit with employing people imo.

You aint wrong there,I think its only us tree lads that notice bad work, Joe Public doesnt, or they think its great because like you said they have a bit more sunlight in the garden:001_smile:

I reckon Lee's original post is pretty accurate, Its extremely hard to get from being a small business to being a big business in this game. And as others have said there are all sorts of guys laid off from various backgrounds, mostly construction, willing to have a go at tree cutting, and stevies right, its not rocket science.

The only thing we have on our side is our ever more litigeous society, which though annoying, creates fear and fear creates work for surveyors and then contractors. The legal system is one sector which I don't see shrinking over the next 10 years.:001_smile:

being talented at alot of diferent skills isnt being a jack of all trades, i have seen roberts work from trees to patios, each one is as good as i have ever seen and any man who can take winter off must be doing something right:thumbup1:

Thank you stevie, your cheque is in the post

Right first time Lee, I reckon.

I can see small firms digging in together on bigger jobs.

Works for me.

Thats the way forward, split up on the small stuff and pull together on the big ones, gives you the oportunity to tick over without laying people off when things are lean.
