I don't know if its differnet north of the border, I expect it is, but when I phoned the helpline yesterday I spoke to a definate scottish person! I think he had just split up with Ken!

 

Shrek, it is your money and thats why it goes towards your tax bill. It has worked for me too over the years but now I have given in!

 

Years ago we cut down a load of trees to build a waitrose store on a brownfeild site (overgrown ex comercial land) the job came to 30K and we didn't have CIS so they just paid it in full out petty cash! No worries but we had agreed that in advance.

 

I don't like beign right, its not normal for me, but there it is. I registered yesterday and am just goign to charge a bit more from now on and look forward to a lower tax bill each year cos of all the money that has gone into it!

they can always pay you on completion, it just depends how much you want your money on time, businesses dont play nice, its business. Stand your ground and you will get your money..

No its not business Stevie, they are still paying the 20%, and they have to pay it monthly or quaterly direct to the inland revenue (on your behalf) and there are huge fines for non compliance. It's not so they can hold on to the money. I bet they would much rather not deduct it, they could save on accountants and paperwork!

Yes, it means they would pay quicker and it makes thme feel more assured that they are not going to get fined. You might also get work over non cis firms and be able to charge a bit more while your at it.

I'm registered and they don't stop me a penny, you can have it so you get the full amount owed, unless your a late tax payer etc etc.........

Thats interesting! So ifyou are fully uptogether and paid all your tax in advance like the IR think everyone should, then the company asks the IR about you and get told not to deduct? Is that right?

 

That does sound fair, never gonna happen for me though, I pay in arrears and thats that.

I have a letter from my local tax office saying my work is agricultural and as such exempt, its dated 1999.

 

I just send a copy of it with the invoice and always get paid in full.
