Can anyone clear up the two rope working? yet again a guidance document is full of 'appears' and 'ifs'.

I do not feel that there is a clear line to follow, there is a lot of leeway for everyone to follow a different path. Everyone will also believe they are following the guidance correctly. It will only be when its all to late that we will find out.

can anyone point me in the right direction, is it:

1- ALWAYS have two ropes connected to separate anchors where possible. When changing one of the main anchors a third rope/line is used to maintain two ropes all the time.

2- ONE main line is used around the tree. When cutting or in a place which may cause a swing/pendulum a second line/lanyard should be used.  Once out of a swing position and not cutting you can ascend and descend on one line.

3- NONE OF THE ABOVE.

1.
My understanding is that a ‘back up’ system is to be used in addition to your main climbing line.
This is obviously to protect the climber from the eventuality of equipment and/or anchor point failure.
It seems to be up to you what kind of back up system you employ (provided it complies with PUWER and WAHR)

It seems that some concessions were achieved from the HSE’s original insistence of two separate and complete ‘main-line systems’ from two separate, independent anchor points.

The new technical guides are coming out soon which will give more detailed guidance.

Everyone went quiet about it after Covid-19 hit.....

My take on it is that it is more a step by step. So if you cannot guarantee on Gods green earth that anchor point wont snap, you have two anchor points which must be able to get you to ground. With, what ever height yr acheiving - rope systems. You also cannot allow a pendulum swing more than 2 m. Which handily 2Rope use should reduce.

But then every tree is different and every job is different so make yr own mind up ! Oh..... And write it down beforehand then yr in the clear.  Now,   for LoLeR 98..my child ?   K

Hi all,

The Technical Guide is actually open for consultation, you can view it and take part here:

Any concerns you have, this is the best way to address them. Although if you can't fit your response into the consultation survey, then you can e-mail [email protected]

The consultation closes this Friday

Thanks,

Steve

I read it as you don't need to climb on two lines......

Can continue as is but need a back up safety line in.

Safety line imo is for backup and decent. Not needed for accent.

.... So yr putting in 2Ropes then....... So you might as well ascend on 2Ropes then. As in some cases that might be convenient... Or... K

ALL - please see Timon's post above (far more succinct than I could ever post...thanks Timon.)

"Use of the back-up" (as per the ICoP p.33) is key and the DRAFT Technical Guide goes some way to indicating the various ways this may be achieved (p31 I think.)

Paul
