Another “what’s my wood” thread!

Dense, appears to have been slow growing (65ish rings in a 12” round). Quite thick bark and very red when split. Cedar maybe?

That’s it split alongside some sycamore. Splits nicely - very straight grain with few knots.

Hmmm, that was my first thought too when I saw it in the yard but the bark seemed too soft and more like a coniferous tree?

Red when cut = Alder,  but bark aint telling that  ? K

Definitely wouldn't say alder looks like oak to me. 

So many different varieties of oak though.

My money's on oak. Give it a sniff! Hard to mistake the smell of oak.

Try sawing a bit with a handsaw. If it's oak the blade will go blue/black overnight.

100% an oak species as you can see medullary rays but without close ups i can't tell which one.

No obvious smell of oak. I’ll split a bit more later and have another good sniff!
