winter like the old days

We had quite a few lakes by our house as a kid, they were gravel pits refilled, and they always seemed to freeze over, and we would walk accross them quite happily. They froze over last year for the first time in about 10 years but I wouldn't have walked over them. I'll be over there tomorrow, I'll go for a walk and see how frozen they are now, probably won't walk over them now, age and wisdom etc!

I remember 1981, and they're comparing this to that one. I didn't work outdoors in those days, but getting around didn't seem to be that great a problem (I suppose it depends where you were).

 

Also, I don't remember as much moaning; if the media can be believed, it seems that there are a lot of people expecting every square inch of road and pavement to be fully gritted so that they can drive around as if it were summer.
