I started out with a maul from Screwfix (6lb?) but even after taking a bit of time to put some sort of an edge on it is not as good as an x27 splitting axe,  worth investing once you have learned with a cheap tool.  I then use wedge and big sledge for the really knotty stuff - that is where the workout starts.

X27 is like a womens axe head is to light weight was very disapointed by it after all the rave reviews.

Much prefer maul as don't have to swing it as hard on big rounds the head weight does the work for you.

I use to wack at knots with the maul also but now I just noodle with chainsaw alot less effort.

I appreciate the offer so much! thank you!

I don't feel too comfortable just giving away my address like that though ☹️ As an alternative, could I message you from time to time to pick your brain on tips questions queries etc?

You missed a trick there!

You’d have been better off taking the hatchet rather than picking his brains.....

Thats got days/ months / years of meaningless forum drivel written all over it.

Andy, can I have a free hatchet please? ?

I also have an X27. Its kinda Meh. Takes quite a few swings to bust into a big round and wont look at big knotty stuff. I dont think my size is the issue either, Im 6'.1" and just a ba hair under 15 stone.

I just bought a Rock Machinery 22t Road Tow Splitter instead. :D

I also already had a hatchet in mind?

To update, using an old jigsaw and a hammer I've taken out all the nails and cut down the wood to kindling length and the pieces that can be used as logs have been cut down to size.

Hopefully working on splitting the wood today with my.new hatchet

Just send it to Cornwall!  Weme all related [emoji23]

My Mother’s side is from Devon. Does that make us cousins? I could send it to ‘our’ granddad who still lives in Plympton. [emoji16]

You put jam or cream first on a scone?

Doesn't it depend if the company says scone rhymes with bone or scone rhymes with gone?
