No I mean you should close the ratchet handle up to the mechanism for safety reasons, lock them by closing them, otherwise they can slip.
 

Can someone explain it better?

I think in these cases trying to reverse the damage can potentially cause more danger. Tensioning to support the split was probably the right thing to do
