Update. Maybe it is a sycamore! 
 

The tree top is starting to show some green so perhaps it is just late. But mid May does seem very late. No other trees in our area look this bare.

Thanks. If anyone has any idea about whether it needs to be looked at up close by a pro, or if I should just ignore it for the time being, id be much obliged.

perhaps the reason I don’t remember seeing many seeds is that it didn’t get many off. ?

Quite! You didn't know sycamore as well as you thought you did.

Back in the woods yesterday, thought I’d get a picture. These are pretty much all sycamore, and most fully in leaf, but this one holding out for some reason. Seemingly healthy tree, buds are green but only just starting to swell. There are several in the woods all the same..?!
