Will get friend to have a look at the clutch maybe a possible. Many thanks.

If it starts and keeps running ( the engine I mean ) then compression is enviously ok . If it stops running when it gets hot then its not . ( clearances open up  as it expands to the point were it wont support combustion )  If the chain stopps running when you load it in the cut then iy could be the clutch slipping or the chian has not been sharpened properly .

Well sxbk the  chainsaw has been cleaned regularly. I use both Stihl 2 Stroke and chain oil.It has had it’s filtered changec regularly and had several new spark plugs. It certainly has not been used and abused. I bought at the same time as the chainsaw a Stihl blower and hedge trimmer. Both of these are working  perfectly still so not hashy, however no expert  either. Pity my local agent are useless otherwise I would take it to them to see if it is sortable. The only abuse the saw had was cutting up the huge Ash. It was never intended to use the saw for trees of that size but a storm took the Ash down and blocked the road so we had to do something quickly.

Thanks Stubby, definitely not the chain as when you first put it on the wood it cuts for a couple of inches and then the chain stops turning. Friend is a motor mechanic so maybe he can work out the problem. As it stands the saw is useless so anything he can try is worth it. What make/ model would you go for as a replacement with a bit more capability than what I have?

How much do you want to spend?

Still could be the chain .  If you want to run an 18" bar then you need 60cc minimum . I am a Husqvarna man myself but any pro saw of that capacity would work . Have a look at Echo , Dolmar and Husqvarna if you don't want another Stihl .

Actually tried a brand new Stihl chain and made zero difference unfortunately. If anybody knows of someone not too far from me who does actually know about Stihl saws I’d be happy to take it to them, just not prepared to be treated like an idiot and lied to by my local agents. We do have a good local Husqvarna distributor so maybe that is the way to go if my Stihl is unrepairable. Many thanks all.

Ok . One last thing . Do you dress and flip the bar ? You could have mullered the bar on that big ash . The chain could " flop to one side or the other if the groove is no longer deep enough and there are burrs on the rails . This can give the symptoms you describe .

God you are trying your best Stubby, much appreciated.Thought the original bar might have been the problem, hence getting a new 1. Zero difference with new chain and new bar. Let’s hope it’s the clutch and friend can sort it

Is the engine dying or is it still revving when the chain stops cutting ? Could be fuel, compression or if it's still revving the clutch would be suspect. Get a phone video of what's happening might give more ideas and your location in your profile would help if anyone local would know.
