Wood ident

Hi does anyone know and could tell me what wood this is.

It's very heavy for the size and also very hard

is it black or purple like the photo shows???

It's very dark brown on the verge of black it is quite nice if i had more i would gladly share it not sure what I'm going to do with it yet [emoji16][emoji106]

well it is either a species of ebony from the genus Diospyros (which i'm a little doubtful of myself) or African blackwood Dalbergia melanoxylon.

 

the "very hard" statement leads me to say it's Blackwood as that has a janka rating of well over 3500lbf (UK boxwood is only 2800) and is around 80lbft3 in weight which you can work out if it is close to your log if you weight the log and then work out its volume.

where did you get the wood , and is it fully dry / seasoned ?     it looks like laburnum to me  ( esp bark ) , but photos are not very good !

Yes i agree the photos aren't the best but can't get any better with my camera on my phone,i got this piece from an old joiner/carpenter/undertaker shop that i was tidying out and was given various pieces by the owner he didn't know what it was either but i definitely know its not laburnum as i have some of that[emoji106]

I bought a bundle of reclaimed pitch pine beams a while back. One beam is different and  was clearly mixed up at the yard, it is heavy, hard and barely floats.

This is a picture of the end grain, any ideas?
