On a more serious note, get a better picture of the end grain and seventhdevil is the pro on wood ID

It's very dark brown on the verge of black it is quite nice if i had more i would gladly share it not sure what I'm going to do with it yet [emoji16][emoji106]

well it is either a species of ebony from the genus Diospyros (which i'm a little doubtful of myself) or African blackwood Dalbergia melanoxylon.

 

the "very hard" statement leads me to say it's Blackwood as that has a janka rating of well over 3500lbf (UK boxwood is only 2800) and is around 80lbft3 in weight which you can work out if it is close to your log if you weight the log and then work out its volume.

Yes i agree the photos aren't the best but can't get any better with my camera on my phone,i got this piece from an old joiner/carpenter/undertaker shop that i was tidying out and was given various pieces by the owner he didn't know what it was either but i definitely know its not laburnum as i have some of that[emoji106]
