1.2m kilworth flail

Just acquired a flail for the tractor. The seller has advised it vibrates a lot, and has suggested it may need the rotor balancing.

Any idea where I might be able to get this done, if indeed it is the problem? It may just be a bearing. I need to put it on the tractor and test it

No idea where you’d get it balanced but I had it recently when I dragged a bit of old wire into my flail and knocked a balance weight off. Local dealer reckoned about 300-400 to get balanced again! 

 

It it was a cheap piece of tat so I didn't bother and got rid of it.

How long is the rotor?

Ah. Good question. Guessing about 1.1m. Will check. That makes sense if you knocked a weight off, but you would think that you can just weld another on?

I was going to have a go, you could see the tacks where it had been so a rough idea of size at least but last time I balanced something it would have been my bmx wheels decades ago! Couldn’t be arsed to take all the hammers off first either which I assume you’d have to do to get it balanced correctly. Probably would have ended up grinding the bolts then thinking might as well get new bolts, then hammers, then belts and bearings and before you know I’d be £1000 in on a £500 bit of kit.  Just got a new topper for the tractor and a flail for the digger.

The guy that does our balancing is not far from you, I will get his number for you. Its worth doing some basic checks prior to throwing cash at the balance, the obvious like a bent rotor, spigot shafts into the rotor, bearings and that all the flails are new or at least in good condition. Typical mobile balance costs about £350-£450 depending on time and you will need to be ready with a welder and various sizes of steel slugs .

Cheers Bob. I will have a closer inspect tomorrow. Its 3.5k new, so worth getting it up and running

I'd be tempted to try a bit of trial and error on the empty shaft. £400 pays for a lot of time tacking a weight one end or the other.

Frank Alviti at Ludlow, turned a rotor around for me in 48hrs and was significantly cheaper that has been quoted even with having it shipped back. Make sure the pto shaft isn't bent as that can also give significant vibration if its been bowed. Is the flail a Dragone? as they are well made
