i dont think you can really pick between the two as i depends on what your splitting , i done whole horsechestnut on my knees with an axe and it was easy peasy but the elm needed the maul going at it full pelt

 

i do think the axe though is generally all round better and lighter

maul all the way here, gave up on axes years ago, although TBH since arbtalk i have just got Timber Cutter Dartmoor to come down once in a while and spend a day splitting for me with his machine!

There is an art to using a maul ... its important to use the weight of the maul in the swing to do the chopping and not to try and drive it through the wood by force ... if you get what I mean.

Totally- aim for a point slightly below the top of the log and get he bugger moving quickly, and most stuff willl split i find.

definitely a maul and with a bit of practice (years) iv learnt to give it a little flick with the wrist just before it hits 90% of the time no problems

Maul for me, hit it hard first time so you don't have to go back again. Most important thing I've found it to make sure you're splitting on another block of wood.

i went to buy a second axe today, but instead decided to buy a maul and give it a try. Been using it all afternoon and im deffiently a convert, i find i can split the awkward lumps alot easier

I found that the hard way. Not nice taking a Granfors out of your shin.
