Not if you don't go with their iPad idea, by the sound of it.

Who knows it seems to be in the pipeline, but as one of the top brass has warned there will be contractors who walk out and by the sounds of it good lads are hard to come by.

I've subbed to big companies and it's their way or the highway. Good lads are hard to come by but 'they' have a lot more pulling power than 'we' have pulling power. From what you've said they want you/your lads on site from 8-4:30, or whatever. If that's the contract, that's the contract. Turn the iPad off and leave it securely in the van/yard when you've finished work.

Think of it a a well deserved break. :D Do some paperwork. Buy some stuff on ebay. :D If your times been bought then its been bought. You could always ask to have your pay cut to 6 hours a day I guess?

Again I'm with you, but that isn't the deal you signed upto. Can you speak to someone and perhaps ride out the last of this contract then start pricing jobs for them rather than working for man hours?

A lot of machine drivers have their machine and van live tracked, head office knows/records when the machine is working and when the van pulls on/off the job. I suppose it saves on arguments when billing clients for daywork based contracts.

Yes they do, that and a change in shift patterns that would have cost me about 10k a year, (for doing the same amount of work) lead me to take VR from my last proper job, a job that I thought I would stick with for life. I had to fight to get out because VR's were "scored" out and I didn't meet the requirements.
