warm december

ok its december and in 3 days i have seen 3 wasps flying around and today i saw a red admiral flutterby.

 

anyone else seen anything bizare

Funnily enough had a red admiral fluttering about round the shed yesterday - not what I'd have expected for Dec for sure.

I kept getting wasps flying around in the house then I discovered that I am bringing them in out of the wood store under the bark etc. I was stung a week ago whilst picking logs out in the dark. Also seeing alot of butterflys sitting on the logs in the outside store.

Some, but not many. The ones you'll see at this time of year on logs etc. such as Peacock, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell overwinter as adults,

Had loads of queen wasps on timber this year, sods law getting stung in December. Still, looking at the forecast, the next few days should settle them down a bit.

I wanted a pet wasp. I asked in my local pet shop but they said "no mate we don't sell wasps" They had one in the window last summer.

Several Red Admirals and Small Tortoiseshells in the logpile but the big find Friday morning was a queen Hornet. Never seen one before; what a magnificent creature. The body was well over an inch nose to tail. She's in next year's logs now.
