height for tree protection

[westphalian]

got a load of oaks saplings about a foot high ready to plant out. have roe deer knocking about. do i have to purchase the plastic tube protectors factoring in roe deer NOW ie 5ft or so, or can i just go for rabbit protection height tubes and wait for the saplings to reach the required height?

(assuming my wood will still be around post Brexit)

Post brexit, people will have eaten the deer. It makes sense to guard against rabbits in the interim.

usual practice is to use the most suitable height for the known grazers from the start. 

 

guards provide some benefits to increase growth rates and there's nothing wrong with a small tree in a tall guard. Generally the shortest guard suitable for protection is used due to cost

1.2m for roe: a standard size from tubes etc. Sometimes I use chicken wire.
