Question

Posted

Hi,

During the night a branch has fallen from my large oak tree. Does anyone know of any particular cause for this?

I wondered if it could be the lack of water, but i'm not really sure.

Thanks.

As it happens, I've just got off the phone with a friend in a (usually) wet bit of Staffs. Loads has just fallen off his biggest beech tree.

Driving to a job today,
Driver pulls over,
15' ash branch snapped clean off being held above traffic by a couple of twigs and a phone line.
2 minutes on the roof and it's down, cut up and in the back.
Without "hawkeye" could have been unpleasant for someone.

Has it failed at the junction with an upright stem - splitting at the joint, or snapped a metre or two from that junction. Or elsewhere?

If you can get some good photos of where the failure has occurred it will help to determine whether or not further action is necessary (or not). And some more distance shots to show the tree in its surroundings.

There could also be termites living in the tree that caused the branch to fall off.

Er, no. Just no. There are no species of termite in the UK.
