More Badger Stuff

New thread so as not to derail Gelster's wapsnest/badger thread.

To which: Nocturnal animal screams in the woods.

I had 'always thought', because that is what an old boy told me when I was young, that those screams you hear when out at night were the screams of a rabbit as he was being had for supper by a stoat.

I'm now beginning to wonder if this is true.

Because I've watched a stoat pick up a rabbit and no scream. Only once, not saying it doesn't happen ever, just that it didn't when I saw it.

And because in Patrick Barkham's book Badgerlands (and others )he speaks of the screams made by adolescent badgers for no particular reason.

And I've no reason to doubt this.

So.

Rabbits?

Badgers?

Both?

I want to keep scientific so make it clear whether you have seen with your own eyes a rabbit scream when picked up by a stoat or whether like me, someone told you when you were very young.

Or whether you have seen lots of rabbits picked up by stoats (or foxes) and never seen one scream.

Or if you think it is badgers and badgers only .

Or if you think there are two screams and one is badgers and one is rabbits.

I think that covers it but feel free to add anything else you think might be of interest.

Obviously it will depend on the exact scream as more than 1 animal has a sort of scream like call.

Rabbits definately will/do, not all the time while being attacked but often. Spent mt childhood ferreting and they definately do and its possible to mimic the call to attract foxes so they have learned to come to it as well as many other predators

Even mice/voles have a high pitched alarm call when being attacked (i guess it is designed to panic the attacker in the vain hope they let go for a second so they can escape)

Foxes also have a few scream like calls esp around mating time.

Owls also can have quite scream/screach like calls esp the Tawny

As for badgers no idea, must admit i've never heard off it before but coukld be possible

Deer also scream- very high and very loud, not sure which breed or sex does it.

Sika deer whistle, i think just around the time of the rut (Sept-Oct time) Must admit not sure if they do it any other times

Infact its quite a strange sound the 1st time u hear it.

Ur Red stags will roar or Fallow buck grunt again around the rut time

Have heard some deer (fallow/roe) scream when stuck in a fence and ur trying to free/put it out its misery. Not sure if all deer will scream if being attacked by something??

In my experience with shooting, baby rabbits have a sickening scream if not cleanly killed. Adults just try and run. Foxes scream, humping hedgehogs are memorable. I sleep in the woods a few times a month. Unnerving if you have just watched Bair Witch

Mind, I don’t rough it in a tent

I want to see who’s screaming at me ( I have night vision for shooting)

Thanks all for the replies; looks like it just got a bit more complicated!

My nocturnal outdoorsing is for fishing mostly; that's sitting on the rods recasting a big feeder for bream fishing not the bivvied up sleeping with the rods out carp-trapping fishing, so I see and hear an awful lot of wildlife.

Hedgehogs! fantastically noisy and unmistakable.

And Munties: best description I had was like a small phlegmy terrier's bark recorded and played backwards.

I was sleeping in the car in Wales once when a red-deer bellowed just outside the window. Which was somewhat unexpected!

Thanks again

Happy Days
