Interesting tree, but is it not a Sycamore?

Looks like smooth bark too me..id say beech.

Sycamores often have smooth bark, look at the branch unions and bark plates after the tight bend.

On closer inspection i see the irregular flakey bark plates at the bend.

Yeah could be sycamore.

Best not use the R word on here

now I cannot argue as I am but a novice but if you look beyond the fat  gut on this bloke you can see the beech leaves at the fence, the ground flora is sparse, the sycamore like bark is only on the twisted bit. Can’t see buds unfortunately.

I cannot say I forensically studied the tree but if I recall there were a number of beeches around. if anyone knows the spot it is in Yellow Craig near North Berwick

May well be beech, with the "flaking" caused by the repeated damage caused by people climbing on it, as I'd imagine if it's accessible for kids it'll be hard to resist such an easy clamber!
