Hadleigh I'm getting lumps in my double braid. Not yet had a chance to redo a 16 strand. I'll be trying some blaze now though!

I think I'm just not tapering enough. I'm taking out enough strands following the Samson instructions.

What splice type is armour pruss? I've got a length to play with! Got to let my hands recover first though!

  • 3 months later...

Here are some of my splices from over christmas. The big loops are for a rope guide type friction saver but the pulley still doesnt pull through. Im using an ISC eiger and a mailon on an eye 2 eye which is not ideal. Im going to put some hose on the next one I do. I have also made myself new eye 2 eye lanyard out of some Marlow boa/wasp? but its on my harness.

The splice on the left is the tail of the big loop. I pulled out all the core and just used the cover tapering it down to 5 strands then making a crossover in the middle. I messed up the small eye because I started pulling one of the cover strands from the wrong end and its distorted it all a bit.

I would like to make my eye to eye friction cords a little shorter than the recommended 5 fid lengths. Is this acceptable ?

Also Im crap at doing the whipping and have snapped the eyes on my 2 small needles. Any good tips for whipping would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Will

Great splicing there.

I have the same problem on my rope guide with the large spliced eye. I then made one with some heavy duty hose pipe which does keep the eye open. However, been using it for 4 months now and the hose is wearing where it bends round the pulley which unfortunately is now making my rope guide harder and harder to retrieve!

I think the answer is a large metal ring similar to that on the ART rope guides. Not sure where you can buy one that big but I can imagine its costly!

As for whipping, I used marlow whipping twine and a sail makers needle from my local chandlers. I double the twine and do a couple of stitches through the rope, similar to samsons instructions just so it doesn't pull though. Then start the wraps and form the yale whipplock.

What instruction are you following for your eye to eye friction hitch cords? You have to be careful with altering bury lengths - they are recommended for a reason!

Old snake did a ropeguide with 5mm wire inserted into the large eye i think. Guess that would do the trip and wouldnt wear out :)

Will, I bent an old needle and snapped the eye out of a new needle last night whip locking AP, try whipping further away from the eye splice where it's less tight. As for shorter burys you need to be careful, stitching the crossover is vital and making the taper slightly blunter is what was recommended to myself to do.
