Tell me this isn't rippled sycamore?

Yes nice ripple and probably syscamore.

 

Hickory can ripple too, I had a lovely muller maul with a hickory handle which had just the same satin sheen from the ripples, I was so proud of its looks but it soon snapped as the ripple severely reduced the strength, second handle still in the head.

 

I carved some treen from the broken handle but cannot find any examples now.

Yes it is sycamore, it had been down for a while so sadly some stain, like everything it’s worth is in what someone is willing to pay. Veneer logs in Europe can sell for big money but just the occasional butt here isn’t going to attract the same money
