Best hand winch?

Recommended Posts

Having only used Tirfor's or similar heavy duty winches previously, I was surprised at the effectiveness of a lightweight 2 ton winch that we used today in the woods- Yank made, I can't remember the brand. For pulling over the odd leaning chestnut, it was adequate and I can't see any need at present to spend 200 plus on on a Tirfor or the like, nor the need to drag the extra weight across woodland. Any recommendations of the cheaper varieties out there, available from a tenner upwards on ebay but obviously some are going to be substantial than others and I don't really want Chinese. Yank, German anything but..

The really good ones are lugall i believe.

I have had a 2 ton and 4 ton cheap Chinese ratchet winch for about 8 years. It was 25quid and is pretty bent now but still works. The 4 ton one is the one only issue is cable length isn't amazing

The proper lugall are smoother and have better leverage and cable length but are very pricey.

Personally wouldn't trust chinese one with my life but have shifted some huge barrels or oak etc with one. One lives in the pickup full time as very handy item to have.

Have a look at the maasdam rope puller. Works similar to the cheap cable ones on a ratchet but is endless rope so no limit to length of pull. Had mine for several years and it's a great bit of kit. Light and compact too which helps. Treekit were the only UK stockists I could find for them

I brought a Ace winch last year as it was a cheep version of a turfor and it’s brilliant. I have a 3.2 tonne but they come in 1.6 also.
I think I will get a 1.6 also at some point though as the 3.2 is great but a lot of weight to carry about for small jobs.
I mainly use it to pull stumps out if I can’t get a grinder to them.

I've got the 1.6 version. You won't be disappointed. :thumbup1:
