I had a lady approach me In work and ask if I could make her 15 centre pieces for her wedding. After she explained it too me she just wanted 15x 2" discs cutting from a log. To use as a part of a table decoration at her wedding.

 

I showed her a length of chestnut I had lying around with some nice grain in it. I cut them and loaded her car. She then comes back and gives me £75 I was baffled as I had done it for free and wasn't expecting payment. She goes on to tell me that a local tree surgeon was going to charge £15 per cut to make them so she was happy to give me £5 per cut and I was happy to oblige!

 

These were so simple to make and took me a matter of minutes. I know some of you use lathes and produce carvings but what other extras do you offer using the logs you produce?

 

I have made a door plaque for a customer once by cutting diagonally through then routering out his door number but he was a personal friend so never charged him.

nice one mate, I recently cut a very rough bench from a cedar I killed. The customer thought it a lovely touch and I didn't have to turn it all into rings...

Recently got asked if I could cut a row of skanky conifer stems into “seats” along side the fence where they were growing.....
The customer thought it would look good.....

Extras.. we call these customers “Columbo’s”
Oh.. just one more thing

A daisy table table, a log man, some "rustic" stools and a bench. All for one guy a couple months ago.

We did that a few years back. They loved it... I thought they looked off, especially the one they wanted facing the other way.

Well they overlook Blagdon lake (next to Chew Valley Lake) But there was a great big Laurel hedge blocking the view, that is still there two years on.
