Yes, they are llama's. Made in the mid 80's, they were the size and weight of a Cabstar.

Just not heavy duty enough for the MOD contract.

Just had a quick wiki-look. Thanks for the link. So another solihull winner then? i love the fact that the army were after something such as the RB44 and landy came up with an underpowered cobbled together thing again!

I think the problem was the MOD wanting a U1300L unimog type vehicle for the same price as a used 101 landrover.

As it was, the RB44's all developed brake issues and had to be rebuilt. Mine went shortly after I bought it, and cost me about £400 to have rebuilt.

and dodgy brakes are not something you want when towing a 105mm howitzer really are they? What you said about the Llama is probably true Ed, there was an article about them in one of the land rover magazines and there was a picture of one on the trials and the axle articulation was absolutely amazing.

Too much axle articulation was why they fell over in trials I think:001_smile:

Also said the dodge 500 on what they were based on had poor reliability and the MOD did up the 101 to last till the early part os the 21st c. good old brit stuff saves the day again.

I promised myself a long time back that one day I'll get an RB44 - just because I want one!

 

My personal favourite is the Ford A series based version - there was one for sale on the Transit forum a while back but I had no room or money and I think it was scrapped in the end. That one had a 3.5 V8, PTO's all over the place, air and hydraulic take offs - you name it - hell of a truck. This one here - next to a Transit for comparison:

 

 

 

 

Anyone ever considered a Gaz66 (think it's an 66 anyway) A lot of the Russian stuff will run on any old crap, like cross fuel quite happily and those guys put a lot of work into their military vehicles.

rb44s still have brake trouble and parts are hard to find. they rust badly and are only a two seater cab.loads of them at withams most have done little miles due to them been unrelieble,start at 2-3k,but still wouldnt have one.need hgv licence to drive one.went into buying one for work but wasnt a fesible option torun them every day!old hat machines,unavaible parts and vehicles which dont meet current construction and use regs.
