Chain saw and machine security

Having gear stolen is a real issue, not only the loss of the gear and replacement costs but the potential to loose work over down time. So would there be interest in a security device to deter and prevent thefts?

i have an idea for a system to lock saws and tools up, strimmers, pole saws, hedge cutters etc.

can be used in sheds and vehicles but before I spend a load of time on developing this is there a market for it?

I keep seeing posts about nicked gear so wondering what people would be willing to pay to protect their kit?

£50 for a lock for a saw reasonable? £100?

strimmer/polesaw £50/£75/£100?

they would be designed to fit the major brands pro/higher end gear Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda etc

thanks for any input...

i had had the idea a few years ago but didn't do anything with it, not seen anything on the market but is that because there is no market for this type of product?

£50 I think is probably less than it would cost to make a quality product with a decent lock etc. £100-£150 more realistic for a saw lock (yes more than a basic cheap saw) £75-100 maybe for a strimmer unit.

these would be designed to prevent opportunist theft from vehicle etc not a determined attack by someone tooled up a bit like a wheel clamp in trailer it won't stop a determined pre planned theft but will stop an opportunist it's passing your truck or van or store.

As I see it the only current options are a huge van vault type affair ?

Something that could lock saws to the bed of a van or pickup would sell well I think. I Reckon if pay up to £75 a unit if it was decent.

Thats the idea it can be fixed to truck bed (probably need drilling) or bolted to floor or wall in tool store/shed

Sound like you have a pretty good idea lined up. However as khriss just mentioned there is always a way around security if the thief really wants what they see. And that's the key, don't let them see the tools. I don't know any statistics on this but I would imagine most people who have the nerve to pinch tools probably nick them off site while passing. The best defence in preventing this is to keep them out of site.
If the product is good enough I'm sure it will sell though. Keep us posted if you do decide to go to the patenting office :-)

There is a method to break EVERY lock or device ! It always depends on the determination of the thief and the value of the goods . Liquid Nitrogen freeze spray , diamond tipped drills and grinders , or a HIAB will do most security efforts in , K

I don't understand this mindset.

Yes, if someone is that determined they may well be able to take your stuff. Should we make it easy for the bastards?

Layers of security are far more efficient than any one device. You just need to make it not worth their while as best you can.

The way I see it if my saws are locked into my van itll be enough to deter as opportunist snatch, our at least keep them busy until they're spotted

I agree all I was getting at was if they are out of sight then they are less likely to be pinched.

Layers of security are great especially at the yard when the tools are left over night.

I was just pointing out I bet most tools get nicked when they are left on the ground whilst people are working.
