Anti Pikie System Update

I have considered cameras and there is one that does something like 5km wireless line of site.

My yard is exactly 850m away from my house with no power supply, more or less line of site but with loads of houses in the way.

I've a set of radios which are supposed to be 26mile range, hill top to hill top they do about 6 mile and anything in between, even a wall they do 1mile.

If they did as they say on the tin I wouldn't hesitate to buy a camera and power it off solar.

I already have a fancy camera system in at home so I don't need to buy monitors, recorders etc

Could do with finding someone who has one of these 5km jobbies and get some feedback

Bit p1ssed off today, got a letter off parcel force demanding £47 for import duties, vat and handling on the covert camera I ordered from america for the anti pikie system.

Still got it cheap as they are £399 over here and I paid £200 all in.

Is there a way round paying VAT does anyone know

A way round paying VAT or import duties? As you bought your camera for your business you will get the VAT back when you fill out your VAT return - as with any business purchase.

Woh woh woh!

Vat registered, what's that then!

Not Vat registered Cabstar, I only do domestic and would never get a job if I was.

Eg: One tree surgeon quotes £300, the other quotes £300 + vat, which one do you think would get the job

We wondered how registering for VAT would affect our business, turns out that it was not a major impact, and probably works out in the wash. We have had work our way from businesses that prefer to use VAT reg. company, most of our domestic clients, who are mainly repeat & recommendations, will pay the VAT without much ado. Of course, there are always people who want to pay pennies, then it does not matter if you charge VAT or not.

I do 95% domestic but when your turnover gets to a certain level you've got to become VAT registered. When my company became VAT registered I didn't start losing jobs, although as far as I know most of my competitors are VAT registered aswell. Even if your turnover isn't at the VAT threshold you should consider becoming voluntarily VAT registered so that you can claim the VAT back on your business purchases, you can back date your first VAT return 3 or 4 years so you can claim back the VAT on all of the gear you have bought in that time - giving you a nice lump sum! People shouldn't be afraid of becoming VAT registered - the extra record keeping is a piece of p*ss and you won't lose as much custom as you might think.

It's always frightened me to death, I have always guenuinely kept my turnover below VAT threshold. That's why I will only do three days a week, I can do more if I'm looking as though I'm well under.

I honestly put everything thru the books, it's easier doing your books if you don't fiddle. Although sometimes I wish I had.

I gave my accountant a stuffing this time, I'd rather see my tax go to buying equipment than to the tax man
