Forestry flails are much worse - many have a 100m kill radius - not suprising when you see them work, however it is up to the operator / contractor to set safe systems of work in place K

Many years ago now I was walking along a forestry commission fence line beside a compartment.

On the other side of the fence, in the middle of a field, was a tractor cutting hay, with what was then a new type of disc mower.

A second or two after I heard something solid go through it, one of the little flat blades embedded itself into a post next to me. I always steered well clear of farm machinery after that.

I recalled the incident only the other day when I happened to be near that same compartment.

 

 

I think that the mower in question would have been one of these trailed Hayter models that use combine cutter bar knives on three square spinning plates, so four on each plate.

We had the misfortune to operate one until my father heard a story about a knife coming off like a frisbee and cutting a dogs leg off some distance away from the machine, so it was scrapped.

You were lucky on that occasion, or I suppose that you would have been very unlucky if you were hit by it.

There is miles of it trimmed like this roadside round orchards and fruit growers. Never heard of a nut coming away followed by blade. It must of happened.

You should see the four bladed ones Goaty. I've heard of plenty of telegraph poles that have become victim but never a blade that has come loose
