Rare Morris MRA/1 4x4 Truck Project

 

A great project that could make a very useful vehicle!

 

Here we have a very Complete 1953 Morris MRA/1 Ex-Army 1-Ton 4 Wheel Drive Lorry with current V5c Logbook. It was released from service and first registered in 1973, however it is recognised as built in 1953 therefore qualifies as a historic vehicle. This means it is both Tax and MOT exempt and can be driven without a HGV licence. With an online reg check it comes back with both boxes green, so theoretically can legally be kept or used on a public road!

 

In my opinion this is a great looking truck, with lovely lines, great proportions and a sensible size, these are very rare, although most mechanical components are shared with the Commer Q4, Bedfore RL and Austin K9.

 

Sadly, as you'd expect it will require work before this is possible/safe. It is very complete with all glass, instruments, brightwork in good order, it was actually being used as a show truck until around 1996, there's still some plaques on the passenger door from it's show days. Mechanically it all looks to be present and correct and in surprisingly good order, the brakes have been freed off, so it rolls and steers, however upon testing the brakes they failed and the pedal went to the floor. I have it on good authority that it does run off a jerry can, and can show it running with a bit of advanced notice, it's the original 4.2 litre 6-cylinder petrol engine, with a recently replaced carburetor.

 

The chassis all looks to be very solid. The rear dropside pickup body is structurally solid but requires new floor and planks. The cab will require welding, as you'd expect. It is very much repairable, it will need plating here, there and everywhere, with particular attention to the A-pillars, and bottom rear of the cab. The drivers lower door hinge has seized and subsequently damaged the A-pillar and dropped. Bonnet, wings, grille shell are all in serviceable condition. The wiring looks to be all there, but is untested and has had some 'modifications' over the last 64 years.

 

I have all documentation from it's release from military service, a reprint of the handbook, and the complete, current V5C Logbook. It is Tax, MOT, and HGV Licence exempt.

 

It's not Massive! Some of these trucks are huge, this has a 10 foot wheelbase and a 6 foot width so is a bit more sensible to use regularly than some of the bigger trucks.

 

I don't think I need to tell you what an awesome project this could make with possibilities only limited by your budget, imagination, or skill!

 

It could make an excellent Forestry or 4x4 Recovery truck, with or without it's original cab. It would look wonderful restored to it's original military configuration. Could be built into a living van/camper. On a different/lengthened chassis it could be the coolest Hot rod Hauler, it could be transformed into a Sin City Rat Rods style truck or rod....... The possibilities are endless.

 

This is a very regrettable sale, my intention was to give this some love, put a Cummins in, a wrecker crane or Hi-ab on the back and some big knobbly tyres and use it for recovery work/fun. Unfortunately due to work and other commitments I simply don't/won't have the time to get this done anytime soon, and rather than see it deteriorate I would rather pass it onto someone with the time to get really stuck into it and give it the attention it deserves.
