Newbie - hedge quote

Hi all newbie here.

This may have previously been done to death however I've a question re hedge quoting.

There's a bloke who's asked for a quote on a leylandii hedge. It's 45+ metres and needs cutting both sides therefore 90+ metres and along the top. The approx width is 4 ft and it is 3 metres high.

I priced together usual things such as fuel costs, taking away of all Waste and also the need for a small ally tower platform.

We worked out it would take 1 and a bit days so probably 2 days with transporting waste to recycling centre we dispose green waste at.

We quoted £500. 2 days 2 blokes and the other bits mentioned above. Do you feel this is too much?

We were no where near the quote the bloke had been given of £140. I struggle to see how they could make make a living charging so little, or is it maybe we are too greedy?

We aren't struggling for work and we did a 120 metre hedge last week for quoting 80 more.

Any replys will be appreciated. cheers.

I would say give the client the quote, he is probably not an idiot and can see the difference between professional (you) and some blokes in a white van.

Also another tip, when quoting (especially for jobs like this) always talk with confidence and act like you have said the same number to 100 other people.

That's knackered me, with my White van.

Was cutting hedges Wednesday and someone was cutting next door as well. I cut hedges back to wear they were cut before, the other bloke was just trickling conifer hedges and not making that good a job. He may land up paying for it in the long run.

I handed the quote to him. He is actually a mate who runs the local pub. He is taking the £140 quote so I await the workmanship he has hired!

Sometimes customers say such things to try to get you to reduce your price.

Though they would not tend to come back with such an outrageously low figure if they were up for a haggle.

NEVER cave in on price, if everyone sticks to their fair going rate then we can all make a fair living, leave the loss leaders to the idiots. I'm not fussed about losing the business of a 'go for the cheapest' customer. How can you even be sure they will pay you when they have such a cheapskate mentality.

That reads a lot harsher than I intended but I'm not feeling too articlulate right now.

We inherited a hedge from a firm that just tickled every year. We done it last week and I don't think the customer will like our price next year. I won't be sorry if we are too dear
