I don't think so, lets put aside the O and tacho as they really don't matter, BE doesn't qualify the max towing weight just train weight as you say.

there are lots of fifth wheelers and boat movers using the min artic route on BE. The math does work and you need an old style licence with grandfather rights. When the law changed people kept what they had and were not made illegal overnight.

if you have a 3.5 tonner with a plated train of 10.5 tons you can tug 7 tons as long as the trailer is type 3 approved with air brakes/mot etc on a BE grandfather car licence. You must also ensure the axle weights are observed so the trailer needs to be designed with this is mind.

I admit this is a large quirk in the rules but does open up possibilities. I'm having a chat with a chap who unlike us both isn't talking theory he owns and drives this setup with vosa approval. This appeals to the large caravan types who otherwise would need a medical to tug this sort of weight.

As your in the game maybe worth you getting an opinion from VOSA ?

BE IS limited IF it is post 2013.

Tacho & O licence use TOTAL weights so a cat B vehicle that is 3500kg WILL need both if towing anything, a 2000kg one will need it IF towing 1501kg.

It matters not if you have a pre or post 97 or 2013 licence re Tacho & O licence.

If you can find a Cat B vehicle with a high towing capacity then a pre 2013 Cat BE licence holder can drive it.

PS VOSA do not exist any more its DVSA.

I dont need their opinion I know what the law says.

This is ONLY for cat B licences.

I'm not quite sure why you think I disagree with you or any of what Rog has put. You seem to be misreading what I am saying.

O licence is only for vehicles ABOVE 3.5ton, this isnt.

Same as its not required for a disco towing 3.5 ton or a transit towing 1 ton etc etc still not required. Tacho is different story but again we are exempt.

Its easy to get a 10.5 ton train weight 3.5 tonner new, just have to order it new! Added the original flyer from iveco above where they were selling them. Niche market, limited people with BE licences I guess and no one knows about it or they would shift a lot more as it would keep people legal for cheap compared to the alternatives.
