Local council doing private/contracting work

I've no real problem with this in principle - of the council guys are sitting about drinking tee waiting for a council job to do then why not contract them out and get their wages paid for a bit?

So long as.....

They charge the market rate for the work

They get asked to quote via the usual means rather than using inside information that only the council have access too

They operate at the same or better standards than their competition

biut if they can compete failry and put some cash back in no problem.

But I fear that the compete fairly might be a problem

So surely are council tax should go down if there making money but yet that won't happen I'd rather them sit round drinking tea than lowering all our prices

My mate in the council said all in there 3 man team costs £400k to run a year

Well there you go. I can run an 9 man arb approved team with £250k's worth of kit and our annual costs are about £300k.. The private sector is way cheaper.

Imagine if all our LA's subbed out all their manual work, roads, refuse, housing... the deficit would be gone overnight.

The councils are all corrupt if work was contracted out that £400k a year would be less than halved

In the interests of fairness, that means we should also have access to all tpo applications so we can quote if we want.

Does that mean the outcome of a decision could be difft considering they stand to make money if it's ok'd?

Playing devil's advocate fir a min, you also have to look at it from a customer point if view. "Why would the tree work industry want less competition? Just to make mire money". That's how Joe blogs would see it.

As much as you & I have subsidised all the gear they use, don't forget, so have the customers.

I've had to drop the price of a job by around £300 once to get a job against a council quote. I didn't mind cause I advertised on gumtree & had all the logs taken away for free.

I think in an ideal world, all TPO apps and CA notifications would be available to view by all.

I know that some LA's do advertise these online, but many don't - so how a person interested or effected by the proposal is meant to voice their opinions, I've no idea:sneaky2:

Does anyone have any knowledge about the laws on monopolies and competition?

The private sector are working at a disadvantage, for obvious reasons, in these situations and funding from the public purse in a commercial enterprise surely can't be legal?

Ours advertises online as part of planning

As they should. Not naming names but 'a' local authority near me don't seem to think that the rules of the T&CPA (regarding advertising) are even applicable to trees:sneaky2:

The same authority don't identify TPO trees online, because they say they get too many phone calls from irate customers (ratepayers) when people are working on them, thinking that the works being done illegally - so don't tell the general public which trees are protected:confused1:

And, they removed all of the CA mapping off the planning website, no explanation as to why, and wonder why a) there's contraventions, and b) the department gets loads of enquiries about whether trees are protected:001_smile: and then claim that they are understaffed for the level of enquiries :confused1:

Sorry, I digress...
