You do wonder at what point do people start realising that their tree may be a bit poorly.

 

Having felled hundreds of bark falling off, twigless, rotting n decaying elms, my opinion is they don't - until big bits of wood start falling off.

 

I know of probably two dozen poplars, over 6-7 sites, with the top twenty feet dead and barkless. All are either close to roads or very close to property.
