Most of the fruit woods suffer from checking, let us know how you get on.

Splitting, I have tried many times to dry fruit woods but most of the blanks or boards split despite best efforts at sealing them, rough turning then allowing to dry etc. I now turn them green and wet to thin wall thickness and have much more success, the bowls will go out of round but it all adds to the character. Have a look on youtube at Lyle JAMIESON he always turns from green to final thickness.

.....checking??

Sorry I don't have much experience at turning.

The two nice bowls I made exploded whilst trying to use the skew chisel!

you're showing it by saying that. you do not under any circumstance use a skew whilst turning a bowl.

mulberry is a bit of a bugger if left as a log but split it down the pith (avoiding the burrs of course) and it can shrink radially without building up tension and eventually splitting. seal the endgrain as much as you can and leave them in a dark not too dry place.

you can rough turn the bowls and cover in pva to be extra careful, this should yield better results...
