What's the best book keeping software???

I liked the concept of xero, except that, a "back door" access to bank account, whilst of great convenience, gave rise to concern for hacking down stream and also, whilst it obviously automates much of the paper shuffling the accountant does, they weren't proposing a fee reduction in relation to the reduced "manual" work - just a subscription fee for xero. That didn't sit at all well with me, they get less work and paid the same - I get a subscription fee. That's win/win for them, no advantage me. 🤔

I have used xero for 5 years and find it great as like you say you get bank feeds and my account can use it.

If it makes your life easier is that not a win?

If you but a loader for work to make life easier do you charge the client less?

We find Quickbooks very good. Clearly laid out, very easy to use. Currently on installed version of Pro 2015 rather than online.

I am still a bit neolithic and don't fancy my accounts being in the cloud.

Same, but they don't do an installed mac version so has to go with online

I may have given the wrong impression there.

If I'd taken on Xero:

- it would not have changed my input effort - same / same.

- it would have reduced the accountants work - win for them.

- I would have the subs fee - lose for me.

If the accountant wants to pay the subs for Xero because it makes THEIR work more efficient I got no problem with that.

Maybe have another look at it when time permits.

The online versions are good, if hackers got in you'd be covered by the banks / software company. Still might be worth taking a backup once in a while though.

The big advantage of the online version is that you can prepare quotes on a tablet in the garden of the customer as you walk round the job. The customer accepts online and when the job is done you can invoice it with a few clicks before you leave the job.
