Its just a different way of storing your hand saw. How it changes the way you use it is beyond me, as is how it makes it safer. 

 

Personally I found it a pain having to strap it to your leg each climb, and it could rotate round the back of your leg and the handle would dig into the back of your knee. 

 

Each to their own though.

I hear you Joe...i hung mine for years..the moment i strapped it to my leg i never had to locate it...quick draw everytime.The amount of timez i've seen people fishing for it time after time...having to steady the scabbarb..cutting or grazing their hands...Seen it happen numerous times....
