what did beech do to be such a despised timber??? as long as it's not to be used for exterior purposes it's a perfectly good timber in my book.

 

My 2 cents:

 

Beech in this country isn't very good. It's better on the continent where is grows with an almost softwood like uniformity. I visited a German hardwood mill some years back and they were turning out good quality beech, kiln dried for £7 a cubic foot. Competing with that means that UK beech is already at a disadvantage. It's also not really in fashion with devalues it further.

Some spalted beech is OK but plain beech is as bland as you can get IMO

 

 

Do like a bit of spalting, but I'm sure the dining table will come up ok with a bit of work....won't be a patch on my Holm Oak coffee table though....

We used to use it for pit props.

Quite sure oversized stuff was used in furniture.

Felled quite a bit in the early 80.s.big stuff that is

When we had a bobbin industry, clogs were worn by many and people bought hardwood chairs, including schools, and we had a 3 ppiece suite industry beech as very much in demand,...changing times .

Ercol, Vastern, Whiteleaf ( Goodearls) Berry , all past large users of beech for furniture.On top of those there were mills dedicated to cutting for the upholstery trade.

Thousands of acres were grown to supply the High Wycombe area furniture trade, good quality white beech.

Nice close grain for bread boards, cut and sanded a few over the years for that.

I am a big lover of beech because I can get really pin sharp laser engraving on it. For some strange reason there isn't a lot of beech in this area that has windblown and waiting to be planked up by me and my Alaskan mill. I get far more sycamore which is also very good for engraving and a bit easier on the planer blades.
