20" Bar on a 395

Looking at a 395 but just curious as to whether it's a straight swap between a 20 and 36" bar? Or do I need to be swapping sprockets to get the best out of it?

28" is the largest bar recommended for the 395 on 3/8 they are straight swap but you could change to an 8 tooth on 20" the 576 goes very well with this set up.

 

36" and your into 404 territory and really a 3120 is best placed

Not according the Husqvarna website, Max is listed as 36", Min 18"

Been running a 36" .404 bar on my 395 ( and previous 394 ) for ever and ever . Not a problem .

Ring spanner on hex . De comp out , sharp tap with a No5 copper and hide mallet ....clutch off . Simples .

Only for about a grand to spend so wanna buy as big as possible. It'll rarely be used on 36" bar but I figure it should reall fly on a 20 or 24" and still have spare capacity for really big stuff....will 7 pin on a 20/24" keep the chain spinning fast enough?

The 7 pin will give you more grunt and less chain speed, the 8 pin will give you less grunt but higher chain speed.

 

In general, the larger rim will give you faster cutting speed up to a certain size log and then the smaller rim will be faster. On a 20", an 8 pin should fly fully buried. I would imagine that a 24" fully buried, the 7 and 8 pin will be similar. Much depends on how hard you want to lean on the saw!

28" bar is the biggest you get with the saw. From next year that is all that is recommended for the 395 however as stated you can run bigger with no real issues. Husqvarna do not supply a bigger bar on 3/8 so you would need to factor in a 404 conversion or another bar else where.

I've been running a 395's on a 36" bars for years on 3/8 never felt under powered or lacking torque and still quicker in the cut than the 120cc saws.
