Back up bridge

Sorry mate, but the idea of a second bridge is related to (chain)saw use as stated in your first post...

 

"in case your bridge got cut or badly nicked"

 

My personal opinion is that a second bridge would not make you any safer by itself, otherwise we end up going down the route of two main lines at all times, visor AND safety glasses at all time(already implemented and enforced in some areas of the industry), two pairs of chainsaw trousers, two helmets, etc etc

 

Far better to focus on safe working practice and risk assessments IMO

I just found it a bit harsh how a question was asked re cutting your bridge, answers were given including both advice on second bridges and improving work postitioning, none of which were the right answer and resulting in a few people getting spoken to a bit rudely?

 

Stick a second bridge on if it makes.you happy, don't expect anyone else to do the same.

Hmm, this thread reminds me, must buy a new bridge for my sequoia harness, all the stitching has come apart and it's getting a bit worn

Why would i expect anyone to do the same,everyone has an opinion and you've voiced yours.I do appreciate your input,even though i dont necessaily agree.I dont think there is a right or wrong answer here just thoughts,musings and opinions

You seem to be failing to grasp that this addition to the harness is in no way a relation to chainsaw use.Its simpley an added safery feature.

 

 

Whereas you seem to no longer grasp that cutting / nicking the bridge was EXACTLY the point of the 'safety bridge' in the original post.

 

 

 

We use triple lock and now quad lock biners yet ive never had an open gate incident,does that mean triple locks are unmerited...

 

 

Your 6 years of tree climbing experiance means that the whole screwgate / self-locker farce is probably before your time.

 

A trip down memory lane.....

 

Once apon a time, tree climbers used screwgates to great effect.

 

You opened in, you inserted your rope, you clicked it shut, you screwed it secure. Nothing to go wrong (except cursing to get the things open after cold wet climbs). When you were very high up, or above a nasty pointy fence, you may subconsciously make sure they were shut - but they always were.

 

One day, a Darwin candidate decided to not bother with the screwy-securey function and took a nasty tumble.

 

Our industry (not the authorities) decided to adopt self-lockers as they 'just had to be safer'.

 

What follows was a spate of incidents and near misses, attracting the attention of the HSE, who advised that where self-lockers were used, it was essential for the user to check thay were locked

Not exactly progress is it.

 

Just ask any person who is competent to examine climbing equipment in line with LOLER 98 which type gives more problems. Screwgate? Self-locker?

 

 

Self-lockers.... a prime candidate for an example of the illusion of safety.
