Price of saw dust

i only produce small amounts myself and the chips go to a chicken farmer two wheelie bins at a time. no money traded.

any sawdust created by my chop saw or table rip saw can go straight on the garden.

I cant be arsed doing this and I would rather benefit my own workshop and business. Also if I gave away or sold all my sawdust/woodshavings I would just have to burn more logs to heat the workshop and that wouldn't make sense!

Sawmill next to me can't give the stuff away. Most of what they produce is a wet fine dust.

I take the odd wee bag of their dry shavings for the chicken coop

I guess none of the sawdust burners would be any good with wet sawdust?

:confused1:

there must be some use for it? is it not good for making briquettes?

would it be something that could be composted and mixed with manure?

You're not getting the issues the scale of sawdust produced and the issues with disposal.

This year along, I'd say we've produced over 150 cubic metres of sawdust. It can't be used for briquettes in it's current state because it's wet. However it has to be dry stored otherwise it becomes waterlogged and is no used to anyone.

So faced with increasingly massive piles of the stuff, you look for the quickest, simplest way of getting rid of it. What constitutes best use of it doesn't really come into it!

Our sawmill dust goes to a smokehouse, its given away and in return we get sides of bacon, salmon and kippers in return, we don't look to make money from it as if we can't get rid in its best state we can't get rid at all which ends up costing more long term. The drier material from our firewood processor goes to a customer who is happy to burn in their chip boiler, we looked at the equestrian side of things and they had to have it so dry and so much dust removed and the flakes this size not that and no contaminants, we didn't even try to push it in the end as it was over much hassle for the return??

i agree that i don't make the amount of sawdust most people do but in my busy periods i can fill up a wheelie bin in a day. mine is dry hence why it goes to the chickens as bedding but there is some wet shavings when i turn fresh wood but that is fairly infrequent.

i used to burn mine in a oil drum but this was very impractical (and smokey) so this became the best way to get shot of it.
