what about the old ancient egyptian technique, make a slit in the log with an axe, drive in a dry wooden wedge, then pour water over to make it expand, hey presto split log?

yeah that would do...but realistic what other ideas?

If you used metal wedges and tried it it would work , if you could find a fault or split in the top of the wood it would be easier. We still use the old fashioned way of doing this to split logs in half.

hi lift jack . . bore out two blocks tor the feet to go in, and split it apart, should be left with a clean edge on each half or where-ever it decides to split to cut normally. . .depending how big the stump is of course

 

sounds like blood sweat and tears tbh. . jonsie is/was doing a good deal on files too . . .
