My young fella is looking for a woodworking lathe from Santa - budget is around £300 so we are in the hobby class - there looks to be a number of choices in that price bracket - any recommendations from the knowledegable chaps on here?

Go secondhand, perhaps a Tyme Cub, usually several on ebay for anything from £50 to £150.

A very popular machine that you wouldn't lose any money on when it's re-sold.

I have a 'serious' lathe but also jump on my Tyme when doing small jobs. Also has a swivel head so a versatile machine.

Its gotta be Fleabay, look for someone selling up so you may get chisels gouges and importantly a sharpening system to. the sharpening can be a game breaker leading to disappointment. I had an Axminster 900 for years with a swivel head, great starter lathe and can be cheap second hand.

Most importantly is the fun of doing it, not resulting galley pieces.

best of luck

Tyme Cub is a great litlle machine, only issue with it is the thread is metric so non-standard but you can a record SC4 chuck with the correct insert to fit.

This was my Cub

Think I paid £80 with a few tools.

Then get a full face shield and some books, biggest hurdle will be sharpening. 6" grinder and a couple of jigs is basic stuff.
