Which is what I was doing, I know you read the above because you commented. Highlighting a story that you obvously missed of what Trump has been doing this week. It is a bill he is quite proud off, but also a bill that is benefitting his rich mates disproportionaly to the poor of his country, while saddling the US with an extra debt for the next 10 years.

Quite significant in US politics, and as I said, surprised you missed it. No grandstanding, certainly not empty nonsense with the far reaching implications.

instead of being taxed sensibly to pay for public services, too many tax cuts mean the government has to borrow more to keep functioning

And yes Trump is not doing it well if the tax cuts benefit people who are already well off. If people payed more tax the western world would not have 125% debt/gdp.

Or they can do even more tax cuts and take the debt to Japan levels, 200% and more of GDP, wouldn't be at all surprised. Trump and all other popularity mechanisms don't care about future generations having to pay the interest coupons for their tax cut largess.

Or alternatively spend what they take already with a bit more restraint and a lot more sense.

They can't spend what they take already if what they take is reduced by lower taxes, it's  either lower taxes and less spending, or lower taxes, the same spending and more debt

If Trumps efficiency drive works properly the US debt pile should reduce by the next election.

It really needs the efficiency drive AND no tax cuts if they want to stop wasting so much on interest payments.

Unfortunately with his Big beautiful Bill that's passing through the system just now, there are cuts to services such as Medicare (usually used by the poorest) and some tax rises (prediction is anyone earning under $50k will see tax rises this year), but these cuts are offset by tax cuts (for the richest), with the predicted net difference being 3.6 trillion added to their national debt over 10 years.

I don't think you can have an efficiency drive and cut taxes simultaneously to reduce debts. What you can do is refinance and kick the debt to be repaid a few years in the future, long after your time in office is over and long enough for that generation to forget whose politics added to the debts in the first place.

I am sceptical though how much of the efficiency drive is creating efficiencies in the system and how much is a vindictive drive to cut that Trump doesn't like or has an argument with. That is not creating efficiency, they are government cuts.
