Pick up choices

I'm not an arborist by any means but I've been on the forum for a while mostly for the milling section. I'm a carpenter and I do timber framing and just recently I've been doing more and more milling of logs on site (Which I don't fell myself).

I'm sure you can all appreciate access is a bit iffy at the best of times and my van just isn't cutting it so I'm selling it and buying a pick up. But there's so much information out there on different makes and models I have no idea what I'm looking for.

I just want something reliable and I assume the running costs will be similar to a van. Probably a bit more though.

What do you guys favour as your mode of transport and why?

Thanks, Max

First off I don't own a pick-up but I'd like one and probably need one but just can't afford it at present.

I had it narrowed down to 3,

Nissan Navarra, like the look

Ford Ranger, always been a Ford man, current vehicle is my 1st non Ford ever

Toyota Hilux, reputation

I read to many negatives about the Navarra from engine problems to gearboxes getting stuck in Low to chassis problems. Ruled the Navarra out

Also read too many bad reports about the Ranger, axles, diff's, brakes, etc

Ruled the Ranger out

The only negatives I've ever read about a Hilux is that they're overpriced compared to the rest and that they're maybe not as car-like to drive as some of the others. The question is are they really overpriced or are you paying for the reliability? seems 300K miles is not out of the question and on the road manners issue my primary need is off-road and towing ability.

Now just to be absolutely clear I have no actual experience of any of them so maybe I shouldn't comment, the other way of looking at it is that I'm not affected by owner bias. Also I don't doubt that there are loads of Navarras and Rangers that have been problem free and plenty of Hiluxs that have given trouble, be that as it may.

I'll have a Hilux or I won't have a pick-up at all.

I reckon that. If it's got to be modern, stick with Toyota :thumbup1:

Mate just parted with a 3 year old Hilux for an Isuzu - deeply regrets it.
