Glad I didn't listen.

Small update on my career change.

I never know if anyone cares but here I am...

So if you remember i popped a post up weeks ago asking for advice on getting in to the industry, the comment section turned in to a total sh#t show of

'Don't do it'

'Its not for women'

'you're to weak'

'Don't need women on site'

Etc etc

But anyway, didnt put me off.

I've booked on for my cs30 in 2 weeks' time (sooner that orginally planned) and after sending out a bunch of emails looking for work experience, a guy has given me a chance, and I had my first day yesterday.

He was impressed with my work ethic and hes recommended me to another guy who's offered me 2 further days work.

So actually all is going great, the guy I worked with on the first day was excellent.

Was happy to stop often and teach me as we were going and in return I worked my socks off.

We (he) felled a tree and I cleared the ground, shifted tools, ran the chipper and did general ground stuff.

It was a great day and I learnt alot and at no point did I feel my sex was a barrier.

Glad you had a good day.
But for the most part the comments were positive and offering good advice.

But if it makes you happy to pretend otherwise, carry on.

🤦🏻‍♀️ no they weren't. My first post had to be deleted by admin as it was so bad. The 2nd post only went better as I started it by telling people to behave.

I know where you are coming from . Its all new and kinda exciting . However ( and this has nothing to do with the fact you are a woman ) dragging brash to the chipper does get a bit gutty after several years . Lets hope it gets you further in the job . Good luck to you matey .

So far everyone I've met in the industry in real life has been nothing but helpful, patient and willing the take the time to show and teach me stuff. A ls well as give me a balance view of the profession.

Unfortunately 99% of social media hasn't been so kind but negative people always seem to shout the loudest.

I'm developing a thick skin and it's paying off.

Unfortunately , in life , there are some people that take a delight at watching others fail . I don't understand it myself but its there . Women and horses springs to mind .

If you want honest brutal and knowledgeable advice from some of the most experienced people in the industry then it’s a lot of the guys on this site. The wealth of wisdom on here  unparalleled, it’s what got me into the industry and it’s where I did and still do get advice for all aspects of my business.

Honestly it’s made setting up a business so much easier for me. So I wouldn’t be too fast to knock them, they are being honest. And if I’m being honest (I do more than one trade) tree work can be simply ****************ing brutal. There are weeks/months where every day you leave nothing left in your body in and end up hanging to a pint like it’s the holy grail. And if you don’t work yourself 100% you’re not worth having.

what I’m trying to say is this industry isn’t cut out for the majority of blokes, nothing about gender just strength and endurance (and maybe a bit tapped in the head) That’s what some of these guys are trying to say, they aren’t being crass or negative, you asked for advice, they gave it to you. Take that and prove yourself.

I don’t know how everyone else’s teams run but as a bit of advice, when you’re doing a trial day, don’t let them see you struggle, break a sweat, say your tired. It’s the first thing people comment on.

I personally will always be grateful for this site.

If you are serious about getting into the industry. Be careful who you work with/stick with. There is a ridiculously high percentage of wank firms/have a go’s/ glorified gardeners. You want to learn from someone who knows their shit.

I'm not expecting everyone to be sunshine and rainbows. I'm not green to the fact it's hard work, but what I won't stand for is the sexist caveman mentally that seem to creep in to every post.

I can take hard truths with the best of them, but telling me it's 'a mans game' and 'women don't cut it' is just ridiculous.

There are people that are shit in both genders but tarring only one with that brush is archaic.

I'm willing the work my butt off, learn and prove my worth just like any newbie on site should.

I have spoken to some great people on here and massively appreciate their input, but sadly like I said before the 'tear people down brigade' shout the loudest.

What are you going to do about them? Argue on the Internet?

Best not to feed the trolls.

Good for you for giving it a go. Gender is irrelevant though. You're either useful or you're not.

There are always going to be people to put you down, rightly you took no notice, I have employed and worked with women in this industry and never had a problem with there work ethic. Good luck for the future and keep proving them wrong.

Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. Social media is awful! Channel that into your work but don’t let it affect how you treat or see your peers!

I will say though that your sex does come into this line of work. Tree work is very physical which why many women will simply not be able to do/sustain the output needed for heavier work - especially when it’s every day. Not saying all, just most. That’s not sexism. That’s just reality of the sexes. Men on average have a lot more muscle mass and that is often required in tree work. I’m a guy but have a slender build - I know I would not be able to maintain the output these guys do. All those heavy tools, the logs etc. But if you’re part of a small team, I have no doubt you will find your place in it! A positive attitude is key. And I’m sure you will get stronger every day and be able to do most of the jobs required.

And try not to take all advice or construction criticism the wrong way or always view it through a lens of sexism if you are tempted to. That can easily result in embitterment and sexism of your own. Seen it time and time again. Be aware of your limitations and find a way to excel where your strengths lie.

for example, if you march into a yard, proclaim you can do what all the men can do, and then hurt yourself trying to life a large trunk or operate a heavy piece of equipment, you damage your image/how others see you as well as your health. Never worth it and only ends badly.

Best of luck to you and hope your new venture flourishes!
