Chainsawing with the grain

Folks,

Just wondered if anyone's got any tips on chain types or sharpening style that might help.

I was making some Swedish candles in ash last week and while the saw (Husky 576AT, not that I think it makes much difference) was fine across the grain as usual, as soon as I tried to do the vertical slots with the grain, it really made heavy weather of it, producing dust rather than chips.

Just wondering if there's an approach to this that would be easier on me and the saw?

Cutting with the grain is ripping, same cut as in milling timber. The same chain (ripping chain) will help. Ash can be surprisingly hard to rip cut but with a very sharp ripping chain it should be OK.

Was about to say the same as Alec . Its a ripping cut . You tend to get long strings rather than the chips you get when cross cutting . Sounds like your chain is dull if you get dust .
