they did use this type of idea in forestry, don't think its so popular now , where you knifed off the tree at the bottom, laid in piles of 20/30 and then clambunked whole tree lengths to roadside for processing.

I saw a video where the tree was cut off at the bottom then rollers stripped the branches off before the machine placed it into the pile. It was all softwood farming though.

We build a similar machine at work that does 20" trees, fun to watch it munch through trees

They are based just down the road from me and they do all the windbreaks around the orchards in the area. Very quick and quite a reasonable day rate as I remember for those big commercial jobs. They mainly stack it in a huge pile and torch it as well.

RGB forestry has 1 working ahead of a forwarder mounted chipper clearing the sides of the A1 near me at the moment, so much more control than hand cutting especially on the banking s.
