  1. Gerry Ryan here from Abbey Sawmills, Ireland. I'm enquiring in relation to ash tree's suitable for hurley's and if any Forestry worker comes across this product from there line of work. My team and I have over 20 years experience in Forestry(felling, saw milling). We have full public liability and the required chainsaw certificates for felling, and my tree surgeon will fell roughly 50 - 70 ash tree's per day. Ash suitable for hurley's description The ash tree's suitable tend to fall in the 20 - 60 year old span, with a breast height diameter of 20 - 50 cm being the optimum range. Only the bottom 3 - 4 feet (1.3 meters) of the tree is suitable for hurley's which leaves the rest for chipping's,milling or fire wood. I am currently paying in the UK for ash tree's suitable for hurley's £ 230 per m3 for quality ash. I can also provide pictures of the ash tree's which we have sourced throughout the UK,Ireland and other European countries this past year and also a video that will show the type of felling that takes place if interested. References from past work in UK woodlands/Estates and UK Forestry consultants available upon request. Yours sincerely, Gerry Ryan Abbey Sawmills Ireland. [email protected] 00353 861903167
  2. Hi all, Looking for some good advice in getting forestry/ground work in New Zealand starting around September if possible? Not fussy about where I'm based as I've been before to play rugby and it's all good! Currently work for a firewood firm at supervisor level of which I do all the felling myself so I'm very used to hard work. Looking into forwarding/harvester but training costs are astronomical in the UK! Got my CS30,31,32,38, UA1 and emergency first aid. Will hopefully have UA2.1 & 5, CS39, pruning and chipper tickets by September (money permitting!) Would it be best to sort a job first or just go out with a visa? Any work/visa advice no matter how big or small would be really useful. Cheers

  5. Hi All, This is my first post. I'm looking to change tyres on my Holder A50. They are size 400/60x17.5 (front) and 400/60x15.5 (rear). They are a wide turf-type tread (sometimes referred to as 'dog leg' tread). I was hoping to change tyres to an agricultural type tread pattern, more suitable for working in the woods. Unfortunately there seems to be no manufacturers producing agricultural tread tyres for rims of this width. So. . . can anyone help out? Either with a wheel and tyre swap. Or with any leads on manufactures that produce a deeper tread tyre at this size. Cheers, Luc
  6. Hi, mentioned this a while back but didn't think we would get job, and now we have. We mainly do tree surgery but got asked to clear a wood of fallen trees and hung up trees (mainly from last winter) Species are Beech, Birch, Cherry and Ash Roughly there are 6 Beech around 24 -36inch dbh, five Cherry, around 18inch dbh, then 3 Birch 12 -18inch dbh and one or two Ash around 16 inch dbh all trees above are woodland grown, and around 60-80 foot and still sound for firewood also got a stand of larch with 10 dead in amoungst it, again around 60-80 foot and finally three large field hedge oaks and a large dead Chestnut that have got to come down. I am guessing that the field grown stuff especially the chestnut is probably no use to any one commercially? not sure about the larch (still solid) but would the other woodland timber be worth us cutting to length, stacking roadside and selling for firewood, or is there not enough? - and its not exactly easy processor size if any one is interseted please let me know as starting today and would be interested to know what length to cut timber to for firewood (2.5m?) will be extracting with a timber trailer, so if anyone very local, we could deliver thanks for any help. Peter

  16. Hi all, Ive been at university now for almost 1 year, studying Forestry and Woodland Management, the course runs for 3 years. I love tree sugery and forestry and thought would be a good idea to get a university degree under my belt along with my college qualifications. However, i havent enjoyed any of my first year, struggle with all the work and have faild a few assignments. i much prefer just being at home and earing money instead of building up all this debt for a degree i may not enjoy or feel it being worthwhile. Im thinking of quitting if i complete this first year or just stuggle through 2 more years which i dont like the sound of. Any advice on this matter would help me out alot! cheers
